Miss Plus World Malaysia (MPWM), in partnership with Taylor’s University, has hosted its first-ever `Femme Luxe’ Fashion Show featuring a variety of sustainability and ready-to-wear evening gowns design on 18 September at Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur from 3pm to 7pm. This French-style Fashion Show featured 13 Finalists of Miss Plus World Malaysia 2022 who made appearances and walked on the ramp in classy evening gowns from the mixed Victorian Parisian style.

The models wore two types of garments. The opening ceremony was officiated by Her Excellency Dr. Petra Ponevács-Pana, Ambassador of Hungary to Malaysia.

National Director of MPWM, Ziinine Britshi said,” Dressing luxe is a form of graciousness and courteousness.” According to him, this fashion show is more than a mere showcase of luxurious or stunning evening gowns, but it`s an initiative and great catalyst to spread body positivity, healthy lifestyle, and sustainability through fashion.

“We tend to contribute to finding the right solution to trash and pollutions by turning wasted fabrics into exclusive, valuable fashion, matching our current trends and world class development. Moreover, this fashion show which is featuring full-figured ladies will be a platform for spreading body positivity, boosting confidence and healthy lifestyle, as well as giving a chance for plus size models to show their worth and be engaged in the fashion industry to,

“We noticed many plus size ladies feel like second class citizens, deprived from being in the fashion trends,” said Ziinine.

The participating models were: Sherlyn Chan Seet Leng, Kulbir Kaur A/P Pindar Singh, Shalani Kaliappan, Ranjini Kalidass, Lim Ai Lyne, Nora Che Ee, Daia Nurhidayah Hashim, Sinthupriya, Amanda Jack, Chitrah Devi Ramani, Lam Man Teng, Ainani Syukriah Sanam, and Emilia Josephine Masiun. Taylor’s University Faculty of Innovation & Technology Executive Dean, Professor Dr David Asirvatham mentioned that its Fashion Design Technology students have shared their desire to design and produce garments for all shapes and sizes, and champion positive body image perceptions among youth.

“Through our partnership with MPWM, students are exposed to industry skills-sets and knowledge in designing sustainable plus size evening gowns. Their design and garment making journey is also well supported with the industry grade equipment we have at Mayamode, Malaysia’s first co-working fashion studio which is specifically designed for both the established and emerging fashion designers. Additionally, Taylor’s University together with MPWM will also be conducting a workshop on Body Image and Positivity to raise awareness of body image and address societal issues among Malaysian school children,” he said.

Glam22 Fashion Boutique Managing Director, Talvin Kok said, “Femme Luxe Fashion Show is very important platform as it will not only promote our design and craftsmanship, but also attract many customers, business partners and establish cooperative relationships. More importantly, we want our ladies to look elegant and gorgeous, as our gowns are specifically designed for women of luxury, which matches the concept of ‘Femme Luxe’.”

According to Upcycle4Better (U4B) Head of Business Development, Andrew Jackson, U4B has donated over 25 rolls of fabric (raw recycled materials) for repurposing by the Taylor’s University students, as part of the collaboration between U4B, Life Line Clothing Malaysia, Taylor’s University and Miss Plus World Malaysia (MPWM). We are always happy to help the designers of tomorrow make more environmentally friendly choices when selecting their materials for events such as these. All the fabric that the students have used for this project has been diverted from our Malaysian Landfills.

Beyond sustainability, women empowerment and community support are key principles that we also value, as many of our home sewers across Malaysia are women and from everyday backgrounds. We have worked on a few projects with MPWM in the past and what we respect about the pageant is its advocacy for body positivity. In this collaboration, we hope that more pageants and event’s organisers come forward and consider sustainable alternatives in the future,” said Andrew.

The mission and vision of MPWM, which is the official preliminary to the international pageant Miss Plus World (MPW), is to celebrate and elevate plus size women`s beauty, confidence and intelligence, as well as promoting healthy lifestyle, humanitarian services, sisterhood and women empowerment. MPWM believes that all women are beautiful, inside and out and deserve a chance to promote those causes closest to her heart with a title worthy of her representation.

The Miss Plus World™ Pageant System is an organization devoted to celebrating the essence of the full-figured woman and giving her an avenue in which to pursue recognition and go to the international level,” said Ziinine. This fashion show is part of MPWM`s intensive programme which the finalists have to go through before going to the Grand Finale gala that is scheduled to be held end of this year. The winner of the national crown will represent Malaysia on the international stage at Miss Plus World 2023 which will be held in Atlanta, United States (USA) in August next year.

New York (Couture) Fashion Week

THE WORLD’S most popular fashion show, the New York Fashion Week (Couture NYFW), will be hosted by Malaysia next year in conjunction with the Miss Plus World Malaysia (MPWM) Grand Finale Gala!

Scheduled to be held at the Wyndham Acmar Klang Hotel from Feb 24 to 25, the two-day event, titled New York Fashion Week Grand Gala, is being organised by MPWM in partnership with Couture Fashion Week New York (CFW) – one of NYFW’s most prestigious events that presents a series of couture and luxury fashion shows in New York City, Cannes, Paris, and other selected cities.

In a statement, MPWM, CFW and Global Short Film Awards (GSF Awards) said the event aims at promoting body positivity and sustainability through fashion and beauty, as well as bringing an iconic international platform to Malaysia to turn it into a hub for top-class fashion in the region.

Hosting the New York Fashion Week Grand Gala here will also give Malaysian and all Southeast Asian fashion designers, models and filmmakers a chance to shine and go to the international level, they added.

Among the highlights of the event are exclusive fashion shows (featuring award-winning designer Andres Aquino’s latest collections), music performances, short film screenings and national costume presentations.

The main highlight of the event, of course, will be the coronations and awards ceremonies on the final day, where the best model, fashion designer and short film will be selected and given free tickets to participate in the NYFWs in both the US and Cannes.

Founded in 2005 by Aquino, CFW presents a series of couture fashion and luxury shows multiple times each year in New York City and other selected cities. They include fashion shows by exceptional designers from around the globe, performances by world-class entertainers, luxury exhibits of art, accessories and other products, and VIP dinners.

“Our other major event is the GSF Awards gala and luxury fashion shows held annually in Cannes, concurrent with the Cannes Film Festival,” Aquino explained.

Aquino, a New York-based entrepreneur, writer, event producer, global high-tech and luxury product marketer and fixture of the New York fashion scene, has been running the CFW for more than 30 consecutive seasons.

He is also the founder and director of the annual GSF Awards, a competition attracting exceptional films from more than 80 countries and which culminates with a black-tie awards gala in Cannes, also coinciding with the Cannes Film Festival.

MOU inked

On Nov 7, 2022, CFW, through its founder Aquino and representative in Malaysia Andrew Jackson, signed a partnership memorandum of understanding (MOU) with MPWM and Media Path Enterprise to organise New York Fashion Week Grand Gala in Malaysia every year.

Commenting on this, MPWM national director Ziin Britshi said hosting the NYFW – a first for Malaysia – is a great milestone and benchmark for his organisation.

“(Hosting the NYFW also) gives great opportunities to local models and fashion designers to participate and win tickets to represent their country in the US and Cannes’ NYFWs and go to the international level,” he said.

Models, fashion designers and short filmmakers interested to join the New York Fashion Week Grand Gala and vie for a chance to win tickets and represent their countries at the NYFWs in the US and Cannes can apply now!

Models can apply here, with casting to take place from Dec 6 to 10, 2022, while talented short filmmakers can submit their entries before Jan 15, 2023 – shortlisted short films will be screened at the New York Fashion Week and Grand Gala on Feb 25, with the selected Best Short Film to win a ticket to the NYFW in Cannes.

Tickets to attend this glam show, on the other hand, will be ready for public purchase on www.myticket.asia from 12pm tomorrow (Nov 16) onwards. – Nov 15, 2022
